Airbag Problem Prompts Toyota Tacoma Recall

Toyota is warning Tacoma pickup truck drivers that some replacement airbags installed in their vehicles may be defective.
Toyota is recalling more than 2,000 curtain shield airbag assemblies sold as replacement parts for some Tacoma pickups after they were involved in accidents. The safety devices may not be properly secured to their mounting brackets, the automaker said in a recall report. That could keep them from reaching the right position if deployed in a crash.
“This could reduce occupant restraint performance and increase the risk of injury during certain crashes,” the company said in the notice, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Joyson Safety Systems supplied the airbags, and owners could buy them separately if they needed replacements. Joyson told Toyota that it became aware of the problem in December during a routine safety check.
Toyota plans to notify certain Tacoma owners by the end of September, the company told NHTSA. It will ask those owners to bring their vehicles to authorized service providers for inspection. Service providers will replace affected airbag assemblies, free of charge.
This is far from the only safety issue for Toyota and its drivers.
The automaker recalled 6,000 Tacoma pickups late last year, warning of a defect affecting their four-wheel drive. Toyota said the trucks’ driveshaft joints could break, limiting the vehicles’ ability to turn or shift into park.
More recently, Toyota said it is calling back more than 500,000 Camry hybrids over a problem with dashboard displays. The company said the displays may go blank and turn signals, hazard lights, seat belt reminders, and other warning sounds may not function.
Legal Rights for California Toyota Drivers
Toyota is far from alone. Major automakers call back millions of vehicles every single year, citing a wide range of defects that put everyone on the road at risk. Companies routinely do not announce recalls until long after cars have left factory and dealership lots and been sold to unsuspecting buyers.
This is where the California lemon law comes in. The law gives car owners and lessors across the state some important rights and protections when it comes to defective and malfunctioning vehicles.
The lemon law generally requires carmakers to repair vehicles while they are under warranty. It also requires companies to repurchase covered vehicles they cannot or refuse to repair. That includes compensating the owner for the car’s purchase price, as well as financing fees, rental car costs, and other related expenses.
No specific number of repair requests or attempts must occur before the buyback or replacement requirement kicks in. An experienced lemon law attorney can help you understand your rights and take action.
