Audi, Porsche Call Back Cars for Rearview Camera Defect

Audi and Porsche drivers may want to check if their cars are part of a new safety recall.
More than half a million vehicles are being recalled over a problem with rearview cameras, Volkswagen Group recently told federal regulators. The company - the manufacturer behind the Audi and Porsche brands - said a software issue is to blame.
“A rearview camera image that does not display decreases the driver's visibility when reversing, increasing the risk of a crash,” VW Group said in a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “The exact root cause could not be identified but the analysis suggests that electrical noise, diminished shielding integrity, and timing may adversely affect rearview camera operation.”
The recall covers more than 350,000 Audi vehicles, including:
- 2025 Audi RS e-tron GT
- 2022-2026 Audi RS e-tron GT
- 2020-2026 Audi SQ8
- 2020-2026 Audi SQ7
- 2020-2026 Audi S8
- 2020-2025 Audi S7
- 2020-2025 Audi S6
- 2020-2026 Audi RS Q8
- 2019-2026 Audi Q8
- 2020-2026 Audi Q7
- 2020-2024 Audi e-tron Sportback quattro
- 2019-2024 Audi e-tron quattro
- 2022-2026 Audi e-tron GT
- 2019-2026 Audi A8
- 2019-2025 Audi A7
- 2019-2025 Audi A6
- 2020-2026 Audi A6 allroad
It also impacts about 175,000 Porsche vehicles, such as 2019-2025 Cayenne and Cayenne E-Hybrid models and 2020-2025 911 and Taycan models.
Drivers should be aware of the signs of trouble. “The driver will notice the rearview camera image is not displayed,” the company said. “Owners who may experience this issue are advised to use extra caution when reversing, and they should contact an authorized Audi dealer without delay to have the vehicle diagnosed.”
VW Group said it plans to notify owners by the end of February. It will issue a software update, already in use on certain new vehicles, to address the problem.
Know Your California Lemon Law Rights
These kinds of recalls are all too common for VW Group and the world’s leading automakers. They recall millions of cars every year, citing defects and malfunctions that pose real safety risks to everyone on the road.
Automakers routinely announce safety recalls long after faulty vehicles leave factory floors. Even when automakers eventually call back vehicles, they often struggle to properly fix the issues.
The good news is that Californians have some valuable rights and protections when it comes to malfunctioning and defective cars. You do not need to wait around for a recall to get your car fixed, with the vehicle manufacturer picking up the tab.
The California lemon law generally requires carmakers to perform various repairs on vehicles while they are under warranty. It also forces companies to repurchase covered vehicles they cannot repair. That includes compensating the owner for the car’s purchase price, as well as financing fees, rental car costs, and other related expenses.
There is no specific number of repair requests or attempts that must happen before the buyback or replace requirement kicks in. An experienced lemon law attorney can help you understand your rights and take action.
