Feds Investigate Pacifica Minivan Steering Problems

A new investigation highlights safety risks for certain Chrysler Pacific minivans.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into reports of electric power steering problems in some 287,000 minivans.

Drivers told the agency that steering became sticky during gradual turns, “particularly when the steering wheel is positioned near the 11 o'clock or 1 o'clock position,” according to a NHTSA bulletin. The wheels became more difficult to turn before the electric power steering suddenly returned.

“In many cases, this is followed by a sudden reactivation of EPS assistance, which may result in an oversteer condition,” NHTSA said. “This behavior could increase the risk of a crash, especially at higher speeds.”

The investigation covers Pacifica minivans from model years 2017 to 2018, as well as 2017 plug-in hybrids.

These and other Pacifica minivans have been the subject of several recalls.

In early 2023, Chrysler called back some 67,000 minivans, citing an electrical short that could cause the engines to shut off without warning while the vehicles are in motion. Earlier this year, the company recalled a quarter of a million Pacificas because of faulty airbags. Chrysler said the vehicles’ side curtain airbags may not inflate with sufficient pressure, increasing the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

How the California Lemon Law Works

These kinds of recalls and investigations are far too common for Chrysler and other major vehicle manufacturers.

Carmakers call back millions of vehicles every single year, warning of serious defects that can put everyone on the road in harm’s way. The recalls often are announced long after cars have left factory floors and dealer lots, sold to unsuspecting buyers.

There is some good news, however, for car owners in California. The state’s lemon law offers you some significant rights and protections when it comes to defective and malfunctioning vehicles.

The lemon law generally requires car manufacturers to perform a wide range of repairs on vehicles while they are under warranty. It also forces the companies to buy back (or replace, in some cases) covered vehicles that they are not able or flat out refuse to fix. That includes compensating the owner for the purchase price, as well as financing fees, rental car costs and other related expenses.

There is no specific number of repair requests or attempts that must happen before the buyback or replace requirement kicks in. That is one reason why it is vital to consult an experienced California lemon law attorney who can help you understand your rights and take action.
