Ford Recalls Another 1.4 Million Vehicles

Ford is continuing to cement its reputation as king of the recalls.

The auto manufacturer recently announced it is recalling more than 1.4 million vehicles due to faulty rearview cameras. The move spans over 50 different models.

The vehicles’ rearview cameras may provide a blank screen or distorted images, according to a recent report to U.S. auto safety regulators.

“Customers may experience a distorted, and/or intermittent or persistent loss of image,” the company said in a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “A rear-view camera that intermittently displays a blank, distorted, or inverted image while in reverse can reduce or distort the driver’s view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.”

The recall covers some of Ford’s most popular models, including:

  • 2015–2019 Mustang
  • 2015–2019 F-250
  • 2015–2019 F-350
  • 2015–2019 F-450
  • 2016–2019 F-550
  • 2019 Ranger
  • 2015–2017 Expedition
  • 2015–2017 Lincoln Navigator

Ford said it planned to start notifying owners of recalled vehicles via mail in late September. The company wants owners to bring their cars to authorized service providers for inspection and repair.

This is nothing new for Ford owners. The automaker has held the dubious crown of “most recalled brand” for several years running. This year it set a new mark: By July, Ford had already broken the record for most recalls issued in a single year.

The hits keep coming. Ford announced in October that it is calling back nearly 80,000 cars whose rear lights could stop working. The recall includes nearly 15,000 F-150 Lightning BEV pickup trucks.

Legal Rights for Ford Drivers in California

Fortunately, Ford owners in California have some important rights and protections under the state’s lemon law. You do not need to wait for a recall to be announced to get defective or malfunctioning cars fixed.

The lemon law, known formally as the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, generally requires car manufacturers to perform a wide range of repairs on vehicles while they are under warranty. The law also requires automakers to buy back covered vehicles that they are unable or flat-out refuse to fix. That includes compensating the owner for the purchase price, as well as financing fees, rental car costs, and other related expenses. A manufacturer can instead offer to replace the vehicle, but it is up to the owner to accept or reject the option.

There is no specific number of repair requests or attempts that must happen before the buyback or replace requirement kicks in. That is one reason why it is vital to consult an experienced California lemon law attorney who can help you understand your rights and take action.
