Ford Recalls Ranger Trucks, Citing Fire Risks

» Posted May 15, 2026Resources | Share This Post

Ford is recalling more than 140,000 Ranger pickup trucks, citing a unique defect that could cause the vehicles’ sun visors to go up in flames.

A wiring harness that supplies power to the trucks’ visor lights can short-circuit, the automaker recently told federal regulators. That could trigger fires in the vehicles, according to Ford.

“When a damaged wire creates a short to ground, heat or spark at this short may also cause smoke, burn, melt, or fire in the A-pillar area,” Ford said in a recall notice, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “Smoking, melting, or fire in the A-pillar area increases the risk of injury or a crash.”

The recall covers certain Ranger pickups from model years 2024 to 2026, which were built between December 2022 and December 2025. The company said it has received at least three warranty claims over related problems with trucks, but is not aware of any accidents or injuries.

“The sunvisor or headliner wiring harnesses may become damaged as the result of excessive harness tape thickness or improper harness positioning during install,” Ford said. “Exposed wiring may come into contact with sheet metal, potentially resulting in arcing and soot buildup over time from circuit shorts and Body Control Module (BCM) restarts.”

Ford said it plans to notify owners of recalled Ranger pickups by August 7. Ranger drivers can also check the NHTSA website to see if their trucks are covered by the recall. Ford wants owners to bring their trucks to authorized service providers. The automaker also said owners should be on the lookout for signs of trouble.

“A driver may experience flickering or inoperative sunvisor mirror lights and overhead console lights prior to a smoking, melting or fire event,” Ford said.

Lemon Law Rights for Ford Drivers

Ford has led the industry in safety recalls for several years running and appears to be on track to again take the crown in 2026.

The automaker recently announced it is recalling more than 400,000 Explorer sport utility vehicles, citing a defect that could cause drivers to lose control. The company separately also recalled some 250,000 Ford and Lincoln SUVs because of a software defect that can disable rearview cameras and driver-assistance features.

Here is what Ford drivers in California need to know: You have some strong rights and protections under the state’s lemon law.

The California lemon law generally requires car manufacturers to perform a variety of repairs on vehicles under warranty. The law also requires automakers to buy back cars they are unable or unwilling to fix. A carmaker can instead offer to replace the vehicle, but it is up to the owner to decide whether to accept or reject this alternative arrangement.
