GM Pickups Could Stall, Automaker Warns

» Posted April 16, 2026Resources | Share This Post

General Motors is warning that popular Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks could stall without warning.

The automaker is recalling some 12,000 pickups over the issue, GM recently told federal regulators. Defective rear fuel pumps are to blame, according to a recall report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“The driver may not be warned if the rear fuel pump does not transfer adequate fuel to the front tank, which can cause a stall,” GM said in the report. “A vehicle stall could increase the risk of a crash.”

The recall covers certain 2025-2026 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 and GMC Sierra 3500 trucks with gasoline engines and dual fuel tanks.

GM said it planned to notify owners of recalled vehicles by the end of April. Owners can also check the NHTSA website to see if their cars are covered by the recall.

The issue can be addressed without owners having to bring their pickups to dealers, according to GM.

“General Motors will update the software in the vehicle’s engine control module,” the automaker said. “Owners who have accepted applicable terms and conditions will have the opportunity to accept these software changes using wireless over-the-air technology without having to bring their vehicle to a dealership. Alternatively, owners may have the updates performed at a GM dealer.”

This is far from the only safety issue facing GM and its car owners.

The company recently told dealers to stop selling more than 30,000 new Chevrolet Corvettes due to turn-signal problems. GM also recently said it was recalling 43,000 Chevy Tahoes and Suburbans, as well as GMC Yukons and Cadillac Escalades, whose wheels could lock up unexpectedly.

How the California Lemon Law Works

Californians do not have to wait for recalls in order to get many defective vehicles fixed. That is because you have some important rights and protections under the state’s lemon law.

Known formally as the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, the California lemon law generally requires car manufacturers to perform a variety of repairs on vehicles while they are under warranty. The law also requires automakers to buy back cars that they are unable or simply refuse to fix. A carmaker can instead offer to replace the vehicle, but it is up to the owner to decide whether to accept or reject the offer.

There is no specific number of repair requests or attempts required before the buyback or replace requirement kicks in. An experienced California lemon law attorney can help you understand your rights and take action.
