Honda Recalls 100k Cars, Warns of Airbag Defect

Honda is recalling about 100,000 vehicles due to a problem with their airbag sensors.
Front passenger air bag sensors are designed to detect the weights of people sitting in the seats, so that air bags do not fully deploy for children and people below certain size limits. But they may not be doing their jobs properly, Honda recently told federal regulators.
“In the event of a crash, the front passenger frontal and knee airbags may deploy despite the presence of an occupant for whom deployment should be suppressed, increasing the risk of injury,” Honda said in a recall report.
The recall covers a wide range of Honda and Acura vehicles:
- 2016-2022 Honda Civic
- 2016-2022 Honda Accord
- 2017-2022 Honda Accord Hybrid
- 2017-2021 Honda Civic Hatchback
- 2017-2018, 2021 Honda Civic Type R
- 2017-2022 Honda CR-V
- 2017-2022 Honda Pilot
- 2017-2021, 2023, 2025 Honda Ridgeline
- 2017-2020, 2022-2026 Acura MDX
- 2018-2026 Honda Odyssey
- 2018-2020 Honda Fit
- 2018-2021, 2023 Acura TLX
- 2019-2021 Honda HR-V
- 2019-2021 Honda Passport
- 2019-2022 Honda Insight
- 2019-2024 Acura RDX
- 2020-2022 Honda CR-V Hybrid
Honda said it plans to notify owners of recalled cars by July 6. Honda and Acura drivers can also check the NHTSA website to see if their vehicles are included in the recall.
Honda wants owners to bring their vehicles to authorized service providers to have their sensors replaced.
The company said the problem traces back to a supplier that changed materials after its factory was affected by a natural disaster.
The “supplier temporarily changed the base material in the printed circuit board of the seat weight sensor, which was not sufficiently verified for its intended use,” Honda said. “The alternative base material could allow additional strain to the printed circuit board that can lead to a capacitor cracking and an internal short circuit.”
Safety Concerns for Honda Drivers
Honda, like other major carmakers, recalls millions of vehicles every year. The recalls are prompted by a wide range of defects and malfunctions that increase risks for Honda drivers and passengers, as well as for anyone sharing the road with them.
Late last year, for example, Honda called back some 400,000 new Civics whose wheels could fall off. Honda announced six months earlier that it was recalling 184,000 Pilot sport utility vehicles whose brake pedals could come loose.
More recently, Honda recalled nearly 450,000 Odyssey minivans over another air bag problem. The automaker said the vehicles’ side curtain airbags could inadvertently deploy without warning. Honda said it is aware of at least 25 injuries reportedly related to the defect and has already received at least 130 warranty claims.
