Honda Recalls Minivans for Defective Rearview Cameras

Honda is calling back some 325,000 Odyssey minivans because of potential problems with their rearview cameras.
The camera technology could be damaged by water, the automaker recently told federal regulators.
“Water can enter the rearview camera assembly and cause the printed circuit board to corrode,” Honda said in a recall notice, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “As a result, the rearview camera image can fail to display when the vehicle is in the reverse gear.”
That is bad news for drivers and passengers in the vehicles, not to mention anyone sharing the road with them. “If the rearview camera image fails to display when the vehicle is in the reverse gear, rearward visibility is reduced, increasing the risk of a crash or injury,” Honda said.
The recall covers Odyssey minivans from model years 2018 through 2020. This is the second time that Honda is attempting to fix the rearview camera defect. The company previously installed redesigned cameras in the minivans, but Honda told NHTSA that did not stop the glitches. Honda said it has logged more than 1,600 warranty claims tied to the issue since 2020. The company is not aware of any related injuries or deaths, according to the report.
This time around, Honda plans to swap in fresh cameras from a new supplier. The automaker will notify owners of recalled minivans via mail by August 24, Honda said in the recall notice. Owners can also check the NHTSA website to see if their vehicles are covered by the recall.

In April, Honda recalled nearly half a million Odysseys over separate problems with side airbags. The automaker said it was aware of at least 25 injuries related to the defect and had already received at least 130 warranty claims.
