Hummer EVs Recalled for Faulty Airbags

General Motors is recalling more than 350 Hummer electric sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks because of malfunctioning airbags.
The SUVs’ front passenger airbags may not properly deploy in the event of accidents, GM told federal auto safety regulators. The company said a wiring problem is to blame.
“The front passenger airbag connection in these vehicles may have an improper wire crimp, which under some conditions could interfere with signals to the airbag,” GM said in a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “In certain frontal crashes, the passenger airbag may not deploy as designed, increasing the risk of passenger injury.”
The recall covers certain 2026 Hummer electric SUVs and pickups. GM became aware of the issue in August, when a plant worker reported that “a wire had pulled loose from a passenger front airbag connector,” the company said. Owners may notice that airbag warning lights display on their vehicles’ instrument panels, according to GM.
The company plans to notify owners by December 22. GM will ask owners to bring their vehicles to authorized service providers for inspection and repair.
“Dealers will install a jumper harness that replaces the section of the IP harness that includes the passenger front airbag connector,” GM said.
California Car Owners: Know Your Legal Rights
These kinds of recalls are old hat for the world’s leading automakers. They recall millions of vehicles each year due to defects and malfunctions that pose serious safety risks.
GM, for instance, recently called back some 71,000 Sierra pickup trucks. The company said the vehicles’ chrome front grille deflectors could break and detach, increasing the risk of accidents.
The recalls are commonly announced long after defective cars have left factory floors and hit the road. Even when automakers eventually call back vehicles, they often struggle to properly fix the issues.
Fortunately, Californians have some important rights and protections when it comes to malfunctioning and defective cars. You do not need to wait around for a recall to get your car fixed, with the vehicle manufacturer picking up the tab.
The California lemon law generally requires carmakers to perform various repairs on vehicles while they are under warranty. It also forces them to buy back covered vehicles they are unable or unwilling to fix. That includes compensating the owner for the car’s purchase price, as well as financing fees, rental car costs, and other related expenses.
There is no specific number of repair requests or attempts required before the buyback or replacement requirement applies. An experienced lemon law attorney can help you understand your rights and take action.
