Jeep Grand Wagoneers Have Brake System Problem

Fiat Chrysler America is recalling Jeep Grand Wagoneer sport utility vehicles over problems with brake system controls that could lead to crashes. 

The company is calling back nearly 12,000 SUVs, it recently told federal regulators. Faulty software can disable electronic stability control and knock out electronic brake assist, increasing the risk of collisions, according to FCA.

The recall covers certain 2026 Grand Wagoneer SUVs, the automaker said in a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. All of the recalled vehicles have the defect, according to FCA.

The problem is with the brake system control module, a computer that manages braking functions. It could negate electronic stability control, a feature that selectively brakes individual wheels to keep a skidding or sliding vehicle pointed where the driver is steering. The defect also could cause SUVs to lose electronic brake assist, making it harder to stop vehicles when needed.

FCA warns that there are no advance signs of trouble. Warning lights will not appear until after the module has failed. 

The good news is that the company says a software update will fix the problem. FCA plans to notify owners of recalled SUVs via mail by the end of July. Grand Wagoneer drivers also can check the NHTSA website to see if their cars are included in the recall.
