Lucid Calls Back Air Sedans Over Camera Defect

Lucid is recalling nearly 900 Air sedans due to a camera defect that the company says poses a safety risk.
The cars’ rearview cameras may not work while the vehicles are backing up, Lucid recently told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The company said a software issue is to blame.
Recalled cars “may experience either of two issues, a blank rear view monitor screen that contains a warning or a lag in the rearview monitor image such that it may not be
an accurate depiction of what is behind the vehicle,” Lucid said in a defect notice. “If the rearview image does not appear or does not accurately depict the rear of the vehicle while the vehicle is in reverse, the risk of a crash during a backing event is increased.”
The recall covers certain Air sedans from model years 2022 to 2025. The company said it has already prepared an over-the-air software update to fix the problem. Owners who have disabled automatic software updates may need to download a patch, according to Lucid.
In the meantime, the automaker warned that Air owners should take certain precautions.
“If a driver receives a warning that the rearview image is unavailable or if the screen is blank, the driver should use extra caution when driving in reverse,” Lucid said in the defect notice. “Prior to backing up, drivers should conduct a walkaround of their vehicle, take notice of any hazards presented by or to people or objects in the area, use both rear and side view mirrors, and look over their shoulder as necessary while driving in reverse.”
This is not the only safety issue affecting drivers of Lucid Air sedans. In October, the company announced a recall of approximately 225 vehicles at risk of sudden, unexpected power loss. Lucid told NHTSA that the defect also increased the risk of crashes.
California Lemon Law Rights for Lucid Drivers
Lucid and other car manufacturers around the world call back millions of vehicles every year, citing a wide range of defects and malfunctions that threaten to put everyone on the road in harm’s way.
There is some good news, however, for car owners in California. The state’s lemon law provides significant rights and protections for defective or malfunctioning vehicles.
The lemon law generally requires car manufacturers to perform a wide range of repairs on vehicles while they are under warranty. It also forces companies to buy back (or, in some cases, replace) covered vehicles they are unable or unwilling to fix. There is no specific number of repair requests or attempts required before the buyback or replacement requirement applies.
