Lucid Recalls Air Sedans Over Fire Risks

Lucid is recalling more than 27,000 Air electric sedans, citing a defect that the automaker says could cause car fires. 

A glitch in software controlling exterior lighting circuits can allow too much current to continue flowing, Lucid said in a recall notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This could cause the cars to overheat, smoke, or potentially catch fire, the automaker said. 

“Affected exterior lighting may also malfunction, which can increase the risk of a crash,” the company said. “In some cases, customers may observe smoke, a burning odor, or warning telltales indicating an exterior lighting malfunction.”

The recall covers 2022 to 2026 Lucid Air sedans built between October 2021 and July 2026.

Lucid's investigation traces the problem back to June 2023, when the automaker learned of a fire in the front left corner of a company-owned Air sedan. A customer later reported a similar fire, and the company found a handful of smoke-incident reports that Lucid said appear to stem from the same defect. It said it has identified 33 warranty claims over wire harness damage that could also be related.

Lucid told NHTSA it has already rolled out a free over-the-air software update to address the problem. “Out of an abundance of caution, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside and away from structures until the recall remedy is completed by updating their software,” Lucid said.

Lucid will notify owners who have not yet updated their software by mail and ask them to do so by mid-October, according to Lucid. The automaker said it would also update software on cars in production and those awaiting delivery.
