Nissan Calls Back Rogue SUVs Over Transmission Problem

Nissan is recalling nearly 6,000 new Rogue sport utility vehicles, the automaker recently told federal regulators. 

The SUVs could be stuck in neutral, thanks to a faulty switch inside transmissions, Nissan said in a recall report. The defect could also wipe the gear display from the dashboard, leaving drivers unclear about what gear their cars are in. 

“Operating a vehicle without visual confirmation of the selected gear increases the risk of unintended vehicle movement or a crash,” Nissan said in the report, which was filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 

The problem stems from faulty inhibitor switches that can lose electrical connections, according to the automaker. If a driver shifts into neutral after that happens, the instrument panel may stop displaying the selected gear and the transmission may refuse to shift out.

The recall covers certain 2026 Rogue SUVs built over a one-month period earlier this year. Nissan estimates that a little less than two-thirds of the recalled vehicles actually have the defective parts. The company said it has received more than 100 warranty claims related to the issue, but is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries.

Nissan plans to notify owners of recalled SUVs via mail by the end of August. Rogue drivers in the meantime can check the NHTSA website to see if their vehicles are part of the recall.

The company wants owners to bring their SUVs to authorized service providers for inspection and repair.

Earlier this year, Nissan called back some 52,000 Kick SUVs whose speedometers may not work, for example. The automaker said a software bug was to blame. 

Nissan also has called back tens of thousands of Leaf electric vehicles because of fire risks in the last three years. The company warned Leaf drivers in April not to charge the vehicles and to park them outside until their batteries are fixed.

In California, the state’s lemon law gives car owners and lessors some important protections when it comes to malfunctioning vehicles. 

The law requires Nissan and other car manufacturers to perform a wide range of repairs on vehicles while they are under warranty. It also forces automakers to buy back (or replace, in some cases) covered vehicles that they are not able or simply refuse to fix.
