Nissan Recalls Nissan Rogue SUVs for Power Loss Risk

Nissan is recalling more than 640,000 cars, including some Rogue sport utility vehicles, which the automaker says could suddenly lose power on the road.

About half of the cars are being recalled because the engine bearings could fail, resulting in a loss of engine power.

“If the engine fails while driving, it can result in a loss of motive power and an inability to restart, increasing the risk of a crash,” Nissan recently told federal auto safety regulators. “In certain rare cases, a bearing failure may cause a breach in the engine block, allowing hot oil to be discharged, increasing the risk of an engine fire.”

The recall covers Rogue SUVs from model years 2023-2025. It comes about eight months after Nissan called back more than 480,000 Rogue, Infiniti, and Altima vehicles over the same problem.

The other 300,000-plus Rogue SUVs being called back now are at risk of gears in the electronic throttle chamber breaking, according to Nissan.

“A fractured gear could interfere with other internal ETC gears, potentially leading to a loss of motive power and preventing forward or reverse gear engagement upon restart,” the company said in a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The defect increases crash risks, Nissan acknowledged.

The company told NHTSA it plans to notify owners of recalled cars by the end of March. In the meantime, owners can check the agency’s website to see if their cars are covered by the recalls.

This is not the only safety issue for Nissan drivers. The company announced earlier this year that it is recalling about 5,000 Rogue SUVs for faulty spare tires. Nissan late last year called back some 19,000 electric Leaf sport utility vehicles over fire risks.

California Lemon Law Rights for Nissan Drivers

The California lemon law gives Nissan owners and lessors in the state some strong rights and protections. Namely, you do not need to wait for a recall to get a defective or malfunctioning car repaired.

Formally known as the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, the lemon law requires carmakers to perform a wide range of repairs on vehicles while they are under warranty. It also forces companies to buy back (or replace, in some cases) covered vehicles that they are unable to fix or flat-out refuse to fix. That includes compensating the owner for the purchase price, financing fees, rental car costs, and other related expenses.

There is no specific number of repair requests or attempts required before the buyback or replacement requirement kicks in. That is one reason why it is important to consult an experienced California lemon law attorney, who will help you understand your rights and take action.
