Tesla Cybertruck Wheels Could Fall Off

» Posted June 5, 2026Resources | Share This Post

Tesla is recalling nearly 200 Cybertrucks due to a defect that the automaker says could cause the vehicles’ wheels to fall off.

Failing wheel studs are to blame, Tesla recently told federal auto safety regulators. Cracks could cause them to separate from the hubs, ultimately resulting in the wheels falling off.

“Wheel stud separation may affect vehicle controllability, increasing the risk of a collision,” Tesla said in a recall report filed with the National Highway Safety Administration.

The recall covers the stripped-down version of the Cybertruck, a Rear Wheel Drive vehicle that was discontinued last year. It includes all of the vehicles sold in the U.S., a paltry 173 Cybertrucks.

Tesla plans to notify owners of recalled vehicles by June 20. The company will ask owners to bring their Cybertrucks to authorized service providers for inspection and repair.

“On affected vehicles and at no charge to customers, Tesla will remove and replace the front and rear brake rotors, hubs, and lug nuts with new front and rear brake rotors, hubs, and lug nuts,” the company told NHTSA.

This is the eleventh time Tesla has recalled Cybertrucks, Wired reports.

Last year, for example, the automaker recalled nearly 50,000 Cybertrucks because exterior panels could fall off. The company said at the time that it had received more than 150 warranty claims related to the defect. Tesla also acknowledged that the problem increased the risk of crashes for Tesla and posed a potential road hazard for others in traffic with them.

California Lemon Law Rights for Tesla Drivers

These kinds of recalls are old hat for Tesla and the world’s other leading automakers. The companies recall millions of cars every year, citing a wide variety of defects and malfunctions that pose serious safety risks.

Recalls are routinely announced long after defective cars have left factory floors and hit the road. Even when automakers eventually call back vehicles, they often struggle to properly fix the issues.

The good news for Tesla owners in California is that you have some important rights and protections when it comes to malfunctioning and defective cars. You do not need to wait around for a recall to get your car fixed, with the vehicle manufacturer picking up the tab.

The California lemon law generally requires carmakers to perform various repairs on vehicles under warranty. The lemon law also requires them to buy back covered vehicles they are unable or unwilling to fix. That includes compensating the owner for the car’s purchase price, along with financing fees, rental car costs and other related expenses.

There is no specific number of repair requests or attempts that must happen before the buyback or replacement requirement kicks in. An experienced lemon law attorney can help you understand your rights and take action.
