Toyota Rear Camera Recall Covers More Than 1 Million Cars

Toyota recently announced a massive recall of a wide range of vehicles due to faulty rear cameras.
Backup camera images may freeze or not display at all, posing a safety hazard, Toyota recently told federal auto safety regulators.
“Under certain circumstances, the backup camera image in the subject vehicles may not be displayed or may freeze briefly after being displayed while reversing,” the automaker said in a notice posted on its website. “If this occurs while the vehicle is being reversed, the vehicle may not meet a federal safety standard, and there can be an increased risk of a crash with a person behind the vehicle.”
The recall covers more than one million cars across various models from 2022 to 2026.
- bZ4X
- Camry
- Crown
- Crown Signia
- Grand Highlander
- Highlander
- Land Cruiser
- Mirai
- Prius
- RAV4
- Sienna
- Venza
It also covers other cars produced by Toyota, like certain Lexus ES, GX, LC, LS, LX, NX, RX, RZ, and TX models, as well as some Subaru Solterras.
Toyota said it plans to notify owners of recalled vehicles by the end of December. In the meantime, owners can check the NHTSA website to see if their cars are included. Toyota plans to update software to address the defect.
Lemon Law Rights for Toyota Owners
Rear camera issues are among the most common reasons for recalls. While these defects may seem relatively minor, they can pose serious safety risks.
Toyota and other carmakers recall millions of vehicles every year for a wide range of defects and malfunctions. For example, the company said in November it was calling back Tundra pickups and other vehicles over engine problems that could cause the cars to lose power unexpectedly.
Fortunately, the California lemon law gives car owners and lessors in the Golden State some strong rights and protections. You do not need to wait for a recall to have a malfunctioning vehicle repaired.
The lemon law requires car manufacturers to perform a wide range of repairs on vehicles while they are under warranty. It also forces the companies to buy back (or replace, in some cases) covered vehicles that they are not able or flat out refuse to fix. That includes compensating the owner for the purchase price, as well as financing fees, rental car costs, and other related expenses.
There is no specific number of repair requests or attempts required before the buyback or replacement requirement applies. That is one reason why it is vital to consult an experienced California lemon law attorney who can help you understand your rights and take action.
