BMW Goes Back to Drawing Board on M55i xDrive

BMW is taking another crack at giving the popular 2021 M550i xDrive sports sedan a little more pep in its step.

The company is still trying to fix a slower than expected acceleration time on the 2021 version of the vehicle. BMW recently said it will issue a software update over the summer as a solution.

“In standing-start acceleration, the 21 M550i can't quite deliver on the claimed 3.6-second zero-to-60-mph time,” Car and Driver’s Tonya Quiroga reports. Instead, the publication clocked the car at somewhere between 4.1 and 3.9 seconds.

The company says the problem is a failure to communicate. The cars’ engine computers and stability control modules are not properly sharing information, which, according to BMW, causes turbocharger boost pressure to drop.

The same issue is slowing acceleration times for 2021 540i xDrive models as well, BMW told Car and Driver. Those vehicles will also get the over-the-air software fix.

The update comes as BMW in recent years has struggled with malfunctioning and defective vehicles. Like many other major auto manufacturers, it regularly recalls cars because of serious defects that put people’s safety at risk.

The company in 2017 recalled some 1 million vehicles because of a defect that posed the threat of electrical fires. Less than a year later, BMW recalled the portable charging cords for its entire line of 2018 and 2019 electric vehicles, citing another fire risk.

Know Your California Lemon Law Rights

Whether you are driving a BMW or another vehicle, car owners and lessors in California have some important rights and protections under the state’s lemon law.

The Song Beverly Consumer Warranty Act requires car manufacturers to repair vehicles while they are under warranty. The law also forces and to buy back - or, in some cases, replace - vehicles that the companies are unable or unwilling to fix.

There is no specific number of repair attempts or requests that must be made in order for the buyback or replace requirement to kick in. That is one reason why it is vital to consult a seasoned lemon law attorney.
